Documentation
and Service Definition
Network
documentation is often treated as a "poor relative"; When considering
a network installation or upgrade, insufficient time is allowed for
documentation, and when the network is in and running, the need for it often
slips (or is pushed!) into the background. This should not be the case - timely
fault diagnosis is absolutely dependant upon clear, up-to-date documentation.
Imagine,
as a newcomer, trying to find your way around the London of today, with just a
map from the 1850's. This is exactly what confronts a network managers without
good documentation when they attempt to diagnose a fault. Documentation that
seemed a distraction when the new network is up and running; now, without it, a
downed or compromised network stays down, because it is not possible to deliver
good engineering and diagnostic services on a network that is not completely
understood.
