Migration
Migration
is the process of changing the way a network functions. It can be as fundamental
as moving from one network protocol to another, (Novell IPX to IP, for
instance), or it can be the fragmented and potentially difficult task of moving
from one vendor's hardware to another, all the while ensuring that Service
Levels (SLAs) are maintained and that network operation is not negatively
impacted.
Migration
can be considered a specialised form of project management. It is a task which
demands in-depth planning, unprecedented experience and tchnical understanding,
and an ability to work to minimise risk.
Dedicated
staff must be applied to any migration for it to be a success, but so
often, Operational staff are expected to do their "day job" and
perform migrations simultaneously. This just does not work. The
Operations staff have a constant barrage of requests from users, that,
regardless of how well they are handled, distract the staff from the vital task
of managing the migration, which inevitably goes off-track (and in doing so,
probably puts more demands on the operations staff!)
